The June Informal Meeting of the President of the UNSC and the Chair of the AUPSC

On 30 May, the Chair of the AU Peace and Security Council and the President of the UN Security Council for the month of June, Ambassador Innocent Shiyo of Tanzania and Ambassador Carolyn Rodriguez-Birkett of Guyana, convened the monthly informal UN–AU Council-to-Council meeting, facilitated by UNOAU.

Ambassador Rodriguez-Birkett expressed appreciation for the continued Council-to-Council engagement, underscoring the important role of the A3+1 in informing the work of the Security Council. She provided an overview of the Security Council’s June programme of work. Ambassador Rodriguez-Birkett underscored the relevance of the AUPSC’s session on munitions control, noting that similar challenges are also being faced in Haiti. She further welcomed the AUPSC’s engagement on human rights and transitional justice and expressed her intent to continue facilitating engagement between the Councils, including through the A3+1.

In response, Ambassador Shiyo welcomed the opportunity to coordinate and explore complementarity between the two Councils, noting that mutual trust between Tanzania and Guyana would enhance cooperation between the Security Council and the AUPSC. He outlined the AUPSC’s June programme, which includes sessions: to assess synergy between the Global Framework on Ammunition and regional arms control mechanisms; to receive an update on the situation in South Sudan; to examine the implementation of the Common African Defence and Security Policy; to hold consultations with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the peace and security landscape and human rights situation on the continent; and to explore the role of transitional justice frameworks in conflict prevention and post-conflict recovery.

Both Chairs affirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination between the two Councils.
