President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) addresses Regional Peace and Security Consultations

On 4 March, the President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) Mogens Lykketoft, addressed along with Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs NAME, the Africa Regional peace and security Consultations on Peace and Security. Mr. Lykketoft noted that regional organizations are often better positioned to address threats to peace and security in their region; he called for new reflection on the application of Chapter VIII of the UN Charter, and stressed the need to strengthen conflict prevention. To ensure a harmonized, holistic response to peace and security challenges, UN and AU representatives recognized the need to break down “silo thinking” within their organizations to ensure greater coherence between peace operations, governance and mediation.
