The 10th Joint Informal Seminar and 19th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the AUPSC and Members of the UNSC Held in Addis Ababa

The 10th Joint Informal Seminar and the 19th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) were held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 16 and 17 October 2025, respectively.

Ahead of the Informal Seminar, on 16 October, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga briefed the Members of the United Nations Security Council on African Union–United Nations cooperation, highlighting the significant progress made in peace and security, peace operations, mediation, and addressing the root causes of conflict in Africa.

The Joint Informal Seminar and the Joint Consultative meeting were co-chaired by the Russian Federation, in its capacity as President of the UN Security Council for October, and the Republic of Botswana, as Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the month. The meetings brought together Permanent Representatives and senior officials from both Councils to review joint priorities, share information and strengthen coordination on matters of peace and security across the African continent.

These joint engagements reflect the continued commitment of both Councils to advancing a shared vision for peace and security through dialogue, mutual respect, and partnership. They also underscore the primary responsibility of the Security Council for maintaining international peace and security, consistent with Article 24 of the Charter of the United Nations, and reaffirm the mandate of the AU PSC concerning the promotion of peace, security and stability in Africa, as per the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council

The deliberations built on the strong foundations of the UN-AU Joint Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security, reaffirming both Councils’ determination to deepen collaboration in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction, while ensuring that African solutions remain at the heart of efforts to address the continent’s evolving security challenges.

As we mark nearly two decades of this strategic partnership between the AUPSC and the UNSC, the meetings in Addis Ababa reaffirmed our shared conviction that global peace is inseparable from peace in Africa. Together, the African Union and the United Nations continue to work hand in hand in pursuit of a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous Africa.
