AU Police Strategic Support Group holds ordinary interactive session

On 15 June, UNOAU participated in an ordinary AU Police Strategic Support Group (PSSG) virtual meeting which provided updates on activities of the PSSG. The meeting was attended by Police officers of the AU Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD), an AU Police consultant and AU strategic partners such as the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom and UNOAU. The meeting discussed the recruitment of new PSSG members for which further guidance from AU principals was awaited. It was noted that the visit to the ECOWAS Police Mission in the Gambia which initially had been postponed would require follow up.

PSOD provided updates on the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), noting that the number of officers in the police component remained the same, and that salaries and Mission Subsistence Allowances for Professional Police Officers and Individual Police Officers respectively had been paid timely while the payment of allowances of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) was behind schedule. However, the United Kingdom had released funding for FPU which should allow to cover the outstanding payments.

It was further noted that the Training for Trainers (ToT) course for SADC would be held in Harare, Zimbabwe from 8 to 12 August and the North African Regional Capability ToT would be held in Cairo, Egypt, sometime in September/October. Participants also discussed the latest developments with regards to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for police professional officers, individual police officers and FPUs, noting that the SOPs were still pending approval, and that the annexes were yet to be finalized. Once annexes are finalized, they will be shared with the Regional Economic Commissions/Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) and thereafter prepared for approval by the AU Specialized Technical Committee on Defence, Safety and Security.
