Informal Consultative Meeting between the UN Security Council President and AU PSC Chairperson – September 2025

On 15 September 2025, Ambassador Miguel Bembe, Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union and Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for September, met with Ambassador Sangjin Kim, Deputy Permanent Representative and Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Korea to the UN and President of the UN Security Council (UNSC), for their Informal Monthly Consultative Meeting.

The meeting focused on strengthening synergies between the AUPSC and the UNSC on matters of common interest, particularly those related to Africa. Both sides underscored the importance of regular exchanges to enhance understanding of global peace and security challenges.

Discussions highlighted key items on the AUPSC’s programme, including a ministerial session on the Sahel (30 September) and a Heads of State session on “Re-energizing Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa” (24 September), to be held on the margins of UNGA80. The UNSC’s agenda for the month includes a high-level debate on Artificial Intelligence, a session on peacekeeping reform, and consultations on Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, West Africa, the Sahel, and the DRC. Both Ambassadors emphasized the need for enhanced political engagement to address ongoing crises.
