SRSG to the AU and Head of UNOAU meets EU Ambassadors to Sudan to discuss ongoing conflict in Sudan
On 4 and 7 July, the SRSG to the AU and Head of UNOAU, Parfait Onanga-Ayanga met with Ambassadors of European Union (EU) Member States to Sudan who visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
On 4 July, he held a meeting with the Ambassador of Norway to Sudan, Endre Stiansen.
On 7 July, he met with the Permanent Representative of Italy to the AU and the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa (UNECA), Alberto Bertoni; Ambassador of Italy to Sudan, Michele Tommasi; Deputy Head of Mission of Italy to Sudan, Luca Rapone; and the Ambassador of Sweden to Sudan, Signe Burgstaller.
In both meetings, participants discussed the deteriorating security situation in Sudan, the suspension of the Jeddah talks and the need to include civilian voices in any conflict resolution efforts. The SRSG to the AU and Head of UNOAU and the Ambassadors deplored the limited success of the Jeddah process, cautioned against the proliferation of peace initiatives, and highlighted the important roles of the AU and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in mediating the conflict.
