UNOAU participates in Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government and in extraordinary Humanitarian Summit

From 27 to 28 May, UNOAU participated at the 16th Extraordinary Session on of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, as well as at the Humanitarian Summit and pledging conference; which took place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat called for stronger commitment continentally and internationally to effectively combat the growing threat of terrorism. Regarding the issue of Unconstitutional Changes of Government, the Chairperson called on AU Member States to strengthen coordination of actions of the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to better support a rapid return to constitutional order in affected countries. In its draft outcome document, the Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government: (i) calls on the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) to operationalize its sub-committee on counter terrorism; (ii) mandates the AUC, working with RECs/Regional Mechanisms, to develop a comprehensive strategic Plan of Action on Countering Violent Extremism; and (iii) requests the AU Peace and Security Council to establish a sub-committee on Unconstitutional Changes of Government and to reactivate its sub-committee on sanctions.
