UNOAU supports the AU in the design and delivery of a ToT Course in Compliance and Accountability for senior Police and Military Officers from the SADC
From 3 to 14 July, UNOAU in collaboration with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), supported the AU in the design and delivery of a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in Compliance and Accountability to 55 participants, mainly senior Military and Police Officers, from 14 countries of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
The training was held in Gaborone, Botswana, and was preceded by a technical working session with the Chief Instructors of national military and police training academies within the SADC Region to review their existing compliance-related curricula. The AU Compliance and Accountability Framework Project (AUCF) was launched in November 2022 with the objective of enhancing the AU’s capacity to ensure that AU PSOs are planned and conducted in compliance with International Human Rights Law (IHRL), including regional human rights instruments, and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) as well as applicable standards of conduct and discipline.
The aim of the course was to provide the participants with the requisite knowledge and skills to enable them to further build the capacity of police and military personnel in their respective countries to fully comply with IHL and IHRL standards when deployed in AU PSOs.
