SRSG to the African Union and Head of UNOAU meets with the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission
On 29 April, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Selma Malika Haddadi. He congratulated the Deputy Chairperson on her election and reiterated the UN’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the AU on shared peace, security, development and human rights priorities. He provided an overview of their collaboration, highlighting UNOAU’s mandate to serve as the primary interface for AU-UN cooperation on peace and security issues. The Deputy Chairperson acknowledged the steady institutionalization of AU-UN collaboration and expressed her desire to leverage upcoming engagements, including the High-Level Dialogue with the UN Deputy Secretary-General. Their exchange also touched on thematic priorities, including multilateralism, global health, and sustainable development. They concluded with a shared understanding of the need to sustain strategic dialogue at all levels to advance their common objectives in peace, security, and development across the continent.
