UNOAU participates in UNFCCC Workshop on Climate Finance and Carbon Markets

On 1 to 2 July, UNOAU participated in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) workshop on the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism, held at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany.

The workshop followed the conclusion of the 62nd session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB62), which was held from 2 to 14 June 2025. The workshop was opened by the Director of the Mitigation Division at the UNFCCC Secretariat, James Grabert. It convened technical experts from the UN system and UNFCCC Parties, and experts in climate finance and carbon market governance.

The workshop focused on operationalizing the climate financing through carbon markets with an emphasis on accreditation processes, performance monitoring, and alignment with the SDGs.

Participants engaged in technical sessions covering project cycle requirements, additionality and baseline methodologies, removals, and transition provisions from the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism. Practical case studies and interactive exercises were used to calibrate assessment approaches and country carbon policy development processes.

A key highlight was the structured dialogue with the Article 6.4 Accreditation Panel, which offered an opportunity for alignment on technical guidance and assessment modalities. Carbon finance was underscored as a critical tool for scaling climate finance flows, enhancing resilience, and supporting climate action in fragile and hard-to-reach contexts. The workshop reinforced the need for simplified and inclusive financing mechanisms that facilitate access for underfunded regions, particularly in Africa.
