Informal meeting of UN Security Council President and Chair of the AU Peace and Security Council for July 2025
On 3 July, the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council for the month of July, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met with the Ambassador of Uganda to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and PSC Chair for July 2025, Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, for the informal monthly meeting of presiding President/Chairperson of the Councils. This meeting was facilitated by the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).
The two Ambassadors exchanged views on the respective programs of work within the context of building synergies of both the UNSC and the AUPSC’s deliberations on matters specific to Africa and as well as on other areas of mutual interest.
The President of the UN Security Council highlighted, among others, the signature high-level open debate on “promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes” and the second on “cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in maintaining international peace and security”, focusing on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He also informed about Pakistan’s intention to convene a briefing on UN peace operations on 29 July, at which United Nations Secretariat principals are expected to brief on the Secretary-General’s report on peace support operations.
Ambassador Otengo also briefed about the planned meetings of the PSC, covering country and thematic topics, including a ministerial meeting on Sudan and a Heads of State and Government level meeting focusing on the situation in Libya. The two Ambassadors welcomed the signing, on 27 June in Washington D.C., of the agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, and that a press statement was under preparation. They also welcomed ongoing efforts towards Silencing the Guns by 2030 and the work of the Panel of the Wise towards ending conflict. The President of the Security Council promised to communicate to the Council members the key points of his discussions with the AU PSC Chairperson.
