On 2 June, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with Ambassador Innocent Shiyo, Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the African Union and Chair of the AU Peace and Security Council for the month of June. SRSG commended his continued efforts in advancing the AU’s Silencing the Guns agenda. He also congratulated him on assuming the PSC Chairpersonship and acknowledged Tanzania’s leadership in hosting the PSC Induction Programme in March.

Ambassador Shiyo shared that the PSC’s June programme includes six key agenda items, most notably, updates on the Multinational Joint Task Force and the situation in the DRC. Other items cover the Global Framework on Ammunition (GFA), the Common African Defence and Security Policy, consultations with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and sanctions-related developments. He observed that UN contributions would be very welcome for several sessions.

SRSG congratulated Ambassador Shiyo on Tanzania’s Chairpersonship of the African Group of Negotiators and also briefed him on the upcoming UN Climate Security Mechanism Partnerships Dialogue on 23 June in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening AU–UN cooperation on peace and security.
