UNOAU Supports Inaugural Africa Climate, Peace and Security Knowledge and Practice Sharing Series in Cairo

From 24 to 26 September 2025, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) supported the inaugural Africa Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) Knowledge and Practice Sharing Series, held in Cairo, Egypt, under the theme “Climate Policy and Finance for Sustaining Peace and Security.”

The workshop was convened by the African Union Commission (AUC) with support from UNOAU, the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA), UNDP, and the UN System Staff College (UNSSC), with financial contributions from the Government of Switzerland and Afreximbank.

The initiative, co-developed by UNOAU and CCCPA, aims to strengthen institutional capacity and policy coherence in addressing the nexus between climate change, peace, and security across Africa. The workshop gathered 25 technical experts from 20 AU Member States and more than 10 experts from the AUC and partner organizations.

Opening statements were delivered by Mr. Gerald Mitchell, Deputy Head of Office and Director of Political Affairs, UNOAU; Dr. Samson Ogallah, Head of the Climate Change Unit, AUC; and representatives from CCCPA, Switzerland, UNDP, and Afreximbank. Policy updates were presented by Dr. Philip Attuquayefio, Climate Security Advisor, AUC-PAPS, who briefed participants on the Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security (CAP-CPS) ahead of COP30.

The workshop concluded with calls for the AUC and partners to develop continental toolkits, establish a CPS-related climate finance platform, and strengthen regional engagement to integrate CPS into national and continental frameworks. UNOAU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the AUC in operationalising CPS integration and in preparing the next sessions of the Series in 2026.
