Monthly Informal Meeting of the AU PSC Chairperson and the UN Security Council President for May
On 9 May, the Ambassador of Sierra Leone to Ethiopia, Permanent Representative to AU and Chairperson of AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for May, Ambassador Harold Bundu Saffa, and the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, also President of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for May, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, held the informal monthly meeting of presiding principals of the Councils. This meeting was facilitated by the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).
Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris hailed the contribution that the monthly informal meetings forum provides towards building synergies between the two Councils. He briefed about the Security Council planned sessions and the engagements undertaken with the three African non-permanent members of the Security Council (A3). He also briefed about the two planned signature open debates: the 20 May high-level open debate on Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Maritime security, and the 22 May open debate on the Protection of Civilians.
Chairperson of the AU PSC, Ambassador Harold Bundu Saffa, briefed about the planned activities of the AU PSC, including security sector reform programs for the Gambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali and South Sudan, the development of National Action Plans on Youth Peace and Security, the Open session on organised transnational crime in the Sahel, the AU PSC engagement with the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, the Commemoration of the International Day of Living Together in Peace, a session on addressing food insecurity as a driver of conflict in Africa, and the planned PSC field mission to the Republic of Guinea.
The two Principals also exchanged views on current developments in the Middle East and appealed for a durable sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. Both Principals hailed the strengthening collaboration between the two Councils and how they look forward to the next Annual Joint Consultative Meeting of the Councils later this year.
