UNOAU participates in the Review of AUSSOM specific Pre-deployment Training Package for Individual Police Officers

On 17 July, UNOAU participated in a workshop organized by the African Union Commission at the Institute for Security Studies in Addis Ababa. This was the second session in a series, following an earlier workshop held from 10 to 12 June 2025, aimed at reviewing the AUSSOM-specific Pre-deployment Training Package (PDT) for Individual Police Officers (IPOs). The workshop brought together a technical working group with participation from AUPSOD, ISS, GIZ and UNOAU representatives.

The review was guided by the decision of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union at its 1217th meeting on 20 June 2024, which endorsed the findings of the AU Commission’s report on the Joint Strategic Assessment for post-ATMIS security arrangements and the establishment of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The primary aim of the workshops was to incorporate AUSSOM’s mandate and tasks into the revised mission specific PDT for IPOs.  Emphasis was placed on aligning the training with the revised police mandate, ensuring that IPOs are equipped with the necessary contextual understanding of Somalia’s complex and fragile environment. The review of the course reader was finalized, and the team proceeded to review the Facilitators’ Guide of the Pre-deployment Training Package. UNOAU will continue to support the review process.
