She Stands for Peace Initiative
In the year 2020, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and African Union Commission (AUC) launched a joint initiative to publish a commemorative book portraying the stories of 20 African Women and Women’s Organizations that have made significant contributions in promoting peace and security on the continent. The initiative, titled 'She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys', was part of the activities to mark the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). The book was launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Prime Minister of Norway and the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission at a dedicated side event of the AU Summit on February 8, 2020 in Addis Ababa.
Since the launch, additional related products have been created including a podcast under the same name, season four of which will be released in the 2023-24 cycle; a website that provides information on thematic United Nations and African Union’s work in WPS in addition to providing relevant resources on the same. A Community of Practice has also been established to bring together African women practitioners in particular, who are working in respective countries on the WPS agenda. Along with hosting topical discussions on WPS under the She Stands for Peace initiative, UNOAU has published two additional books and a policy brief.
