UNOAU and AU participates in the Second Brussels Climate Security Dialogue

On 19 and 20 February 2025, UNOAU and the African Union Commission participated in the 2nd Brussels Climate Security Dialogue.

The dialogue, convened by the European Commission's Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), brought together policymakers, experts, and practitioners from the EU and its key regional hubs worldwide to discuss the EU’s approach to the climate-security nexus. The AU was represented at the dialogue by the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security. The meeting was opened by the Head of Service, European Commission Service for FPIs, Peter M. Wagner, followed by a High-Level Dialogue featuring senior European External Action Service (EEAS) officials, including the Managing Director – Peace, Security and Defence, Benedikta von Seherr-Thoss, and senior EEAS officials managing climate related files, among others.

The two-day dialogue included key activities such as the launch of the EU Climate and Security Trend Analysis Report, thematic working sessions on scenario exercises and discussions on policy integration. During the working sessions, the African Union Commission emphasized the need for increased recognition of global climate security risks affecting the African continent, including migration and displacement, resource governance, energy transitions and environmental degradation. The AU Commission also highlighted the importance of strengthening foresight, resilience, and financing mechanisms, particularly in fragile, conflict-affected, and vulnerable (FCV) contexts, emphasizing the need for deeper collaboration between the AU and the EU. The UNOAU and the AU emphasized the significance of the Common African Position on Climate, Peace, and Security and its potential to enhance UN-AU-EU cooperation. In closing, the EU announced upcoming Africa-focused consultations on climate and security, which will be coordinated in partnership with the AU and regional stakeholders.
