UNOAU attends the second high-level meeting in Bangui of UN SRSGs and SESGs working on the Central African region

On 28 November, UNOAU attended the second high-level meeting of UN Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSGs) and Special Envoys (SESGs) serving in the Central African region. The meeting, which convened in Bangui, CAR, took place on the margins of the 58th UNSAC session.

Convened by UNOCA, participants included the SRSGs for UNOCA, UNOWAS and MONUSCO, the Deputy SRSG for MINUSCA, UNOAU Deputy Head of Office and Director for Political Affairs, Directors from MINUSCA and the Office of the SESG-Great Lakes.

The meeting took stock of the progress made since the first meeting held in November 2022 in Luanda, Angola, and provided an overview of the socio-political and security situation in the region, while exchanging information on country-specific situations and regional dynamics. Participants shared experiences and ideas on how to ensure and increase complementarity and synergies in the implementation of the respective SRSGs' and SESGs' mandates. The meeting also deliberated on the challenges of unconstitutional changes of government in the region and beyond.

Participants noted the existing frameworks and instruments for addressing these unconstitutional changes, their limitations, including growing claims of sovereignty, and ways to achieve impactful results. The meeting further discussed the recently adopted Pact for the Future and its implication for the UN’s action and engagement in the region, and ways to facilitate implementation of the Pact through the UN presence in the region.

UNOAU briefed the meeting on the decision made by the UN Secretary-General and the Chairperson of the AU Commission (AUC) at their Annual Conference held on 21 October in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to establish a task force to unpack the Pact for the Future and develop proposals to facilitate its implementation.
