UNOAU participates at AUPSC Exhibition Day on Humanitarian, Peace, and Security
On May 13, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) held an Exhibition Day on Humanitarian, Peace, and Security at the African Union headquarters as a key activity to commemorate its 20th Anniversary to showcase the efforts deployed over time to address humanitarian situations across the Continent, organized in collaboration with World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
In his opening remarks, H.E Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, praised the UN's humanitarian support to the Continent and highlighted the need for greater collaboration between the two organizations on the nexus among climate change, the humanitarian peace and security dimensions.
SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga reiterated the UN's commitment to the partnership with the African Union and echoed the urgency to address the intricate relationship between climate change and security, focusing on two key areas: addressing conflict root causes and enhancing preventive measures to achieve lasting peace, and tackling the climate emergency through emissions reduction, climate finance fulfillment, and robust early warning systems.
The event witnessed the participation of dignitaries from the AU Commission, representatives of AU member states, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs), United Nations agencies and various other partners and guests.
The Exhibition Day served as a vital platform for stakeholders to reinvigorate their dedication to advancing humanitarian, peace, and security endeavors in Africa. As the AUPSC continues its commemorative activities, the significance of collective action remains paramount in confronting the continent's most pressing challenges.
