UNOAU participates in International Day of Peace celebration

On 20 September, the United Nations Office to the AU (UNOAU) participated in the Commemoration of the International Day of Peace in Ethiopia under the theme ‘Cultivating a Culture of Peace’, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event was organized by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Ethiopia in collaboration with other Ethiopia-based UN entities and convened key stakeholders, including representatives from the Government of Ethiopia, civil society organizations, academia, religious institutions, youth and women networks, as well as peace advocates. The discussions focussed on the vital role of engaging youth and women to achieve lasting peace in Ethiopia.

During a panel discussion on strengthening the Women, Youth, Peace, and Security Agenda in Ethiopia, UNOAU highlighted the UN’s ongoing support for building a peaceful society. The discussion also underscored the impact of geopolitical dynamics on Ethiopia's conflicts, stressing the need for enhanced regional cooperation, including by furthering the partnership between the UN and the AU in peace and security. Additionally, UNOAU noted the crucial participation of women in peace negotiations, along with the importance of addressing Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV).

As part of the event, UNOAU launched Season Four of the ‘She Stands For Peace’ podcast, playing a trailer for attendees and encouraging them to subscribe. The upcoming season explores themes linked to the four pillars of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, featuring guests who play significant roles in advancing these goals.
