UNOAU provides technical support to Generic Police Pre-Deployment Training for ECOWAS

At the request of the African Union Commission (AUC), UNOAU continued to provide technical support and advice to the ongoing Training of Trainers (TOT) Generic Police Pre-Deployment Training (PPDT) course for the ECOWAS at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center in Accra, Ghana.

The training course, which was scheduled for 14-28 March and funded by the British Peace Support Team-Africa (BPST-A), was implemented by the AUC with support from the International Security Studies, BPST-A and UNOAU. Twenty-four (24) serving and practicing Police officers from Burkina Faso, Congo, Cameroon, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo are participating in the training course.

The training aims at enhancing the capacity of ECOWAS Planning Element, police training centers and colleges as well as to disseminate the recently approved AU Generic PPDT curriculum. It is expected that the training will lead to enhanced skills, competence and capacity among Individual Police Officers to be deployed by ECOWAS member states to AU Peace Support Operations. In addition, the qualified participants will be certified as ECOWAS Standby Force trainers.
