UNOAU SRSG Visits Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation

Dar es Salaam, 25 May 2024 –SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga paid a courtesy call to the Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, H.E. January Makamba. This meeting underscored the strong ties and collaborative efforts between the United Nations and Tanzania in promoting peace and security across Africa.

SRSG Onanga-Anyanga took the opportunity to congratulate Tanzania on its re-election to the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) and praised the nation for its proactive and constructive role within the Council. He acknowledged Tanzania’s longstanding leadership in peace and mediation processes across the continent and lauded its significant contributions to peace support operations.

Minister Makamba expressed his appreciation for the United Nations' unwavering support for Tanzania. He highlighted the Secretary-General’s policy brief, 'A New Agenda for Peace,' which envisions an enhanced role for regional and sub-regional organizations in tackling peace and security challenges. Minister Makamba emphasized the importance of ensuring greater coordination and alignment between these organizations and the United Nations to address such challenges effectively.

Furthermore, Minister Makamba stressed the necessity for increased financial and logistical support from the United Nations for peace support operations led by regional and sub-regional organizations. He pointed to the SAMIDRC mission as a potential model for establishing norms and frameworks for such arrangements under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

This meeting reaffirms the collaborative spirit between Tanzania and the United Nations and highlights the crucial role of regional cooperation in maintaining peace and security on the continent.
