UNOAU supports AU in the development and validation of an AU Military Pre-deployment Training Curriculum

UNOAU in collaboration with the British Peace Support Team, supported the African Union (AU) in the design, development and validation of the first AU Military pre-deployment training curriculum and resource package. Both were developed in the period between 17 and 21 February 2022. The design of the package was based on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), notably on the provision of capacity enhancement for AU military elements to ensure readiness for deployment in AU Peace Support Operations (PSOs). Relatedly, AU Member States as part of the African Standby Force concept, have pledged capacities that are required to be trained and ready for deployment in AU PSOs.

The aim of the workshop, held in Accra, Ghana, was to standardise a military training curriculum to guide capacity development in preparation for deployment of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) into AU-mandated or authorised PSOs. It is expected that a pilot training targeting senior military commanders, trainers from AU Member States and Regional Training Centres of Excellence will take place in Zimbabwe in March 2022. Thereafter, all AU Troop Contributing Countries will have their military personnel complete the validated Military pre-deployment training package before deploying into PSOs.
