UNOAU Participates in Regional Dialogue on Climate, Peace and Security and Peace Processes in the Horn of Africa
From 16 to 18 September 2025, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) took part in the Regional Dialogue on Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) and Peace Processes in the Horn of Africa, held in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day dialogue was convened by IGAD and the Office of the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, with support from the Folke Bernadotte Academy.
The discussions brought together experts and practitioners from the UN, IGAD Secretariat, and partner institutions to explore ways of integrating climate-security considerations into peace processes and mediation efforts across the region. Sessions focused on the intersection of climate change, conflict dynamics, and peacebuilding, with case studies on Sudan and Somalia.
Participants reaffirmed the African Union’s leadership in advancing the CPS agenda, recognised the growing role of IGAD’s Regional Climate Security Coordination Mechanism, and underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation between the AU, IGAD, and the UN. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to operationalise these linkages through the Continental Strategic Coordination Forum of CPS Advisors and to align regional practice with continental and global frameworks on Climate, Peace and Security.
