UNOAU Provides Technical Support in the Development of a Training Curriculum for the Investigation of Misconduct in AU Peace Support Operations

From 15–19 September, UNOAU provided technical support in the development of a training curriculum for the investigation of misconduct in African Union (AU) Peace Support Operations (PSOs). The workshop, held in Abuja, Nigeria, brought together key stakeholders to assess current investigative practices and challenges within AU PSOs.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to review existing AU investigation practices and identify operational challenges in the field; engage stakeholders in developing a strategic roadmap to strengthen investigative processes; and examine the evolving role of the AU Office of Internal Oversight in addressing misconduct allegations involving PSO personnel.

A major outcome of the workshop was the development of a comprehensive training curriculum designed to enhance the investigative capabilities of PSO personnel, with particular emphasis on addressing allegations related to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) and violations of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

Workshop participants included subject matter experts from the AU Commission, UNOAU, the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Regional Training Centres of Excellence, and personnel from AU PSOs. The training is expected to be piloted and validated in November 2025.
