AUPSC Communiqué | 1225th Meeting on Consideration of the Concept of Operations of AU-Led Mission in Somalia post-ATMIS | 1 August 2024

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), during its 1225th meeting on August 1, 2024, adopted the Concept of Operations (CONOPs) for the new AU-Led Mission in Somalia, named the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), following the transition from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The Council emphasized the progress in Somalia’s security and political landscape and condemned the persistent threat of Al Shabaab; commended the sacrifices of ATMIS personnel; endorsed the strategic CONOPs for AUSSOM; called for enhanced international partnerships and sustainable funding; underscored the importance of a smooth transition, capacity building for Somali security forces, and ensuring robust force protection measures; and requested the AU Commission to finalize best practices from previous missions and engage with international partners for support and funding.
