AUPSC PRESS STATEMENT | 1212TH MEETING ON THE ATTEMPTED COUP D’ÉTAT IN THE DRC | 20 MAY 2024
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) its 1212th meeting, held on 20 May 2024, received a briefing on the attempted coup d’état in the Democratic Republic of Congo on the night of 18 to 19 May 2024.
1. Council took note of the briefing by the representative of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the attempted coup d’état by armed individuals, near the Palace of the Nation, in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, during the night of 18 to 19 May.
2. Council strongly condemned the attempted coup d’état against a democratically elected government of President Felix Tshisekedi, which threatened to reverse the democratic gains achieved, so far, in the country, and to further destabilize the region.
3. Council commended the defence and security forces of the DRC for their swift response and for bringing to book the perpetrators of the attempted coup d’état, and for the restoration of calm and normalcy in the country.
4. Council reaffirmed the AU zero tolerance policy on unconstitutional change of government, in accordance with the Lomé Declaration of July 2000, the Constitutive Act and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
5. Council reaffirmed the AU support to the legitimate authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
6. Council agreed to remain actively seized of the mater.
