Joint AU-UN Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Assessment Mission to the MNJTF HQ in N’Djamena, Chad
From 4-9 May 2025, UNOAU along with UNMAS participated in the Joint AU-UN Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) Assessment mission to the Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF) Headquarters in the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in N’Djamena, Chad.
The assessment team was led by the AU Peace Support Operations Division supported with representations from UNOAU and UNMAS. The objective of the assessment was to identify MNJTF’s needs and capability gaps in effectively countering IED threats within its area of operations and outline potential support from UNMAS.
The assessment team met the Executive Secretary and Head of Mission of the MNJTF, Ambassador Mamman Nuhu and the Force Commander of the MNJTF, where they briefed on the security situation. The Assessment provided an opportunity to interact with the MNJTF and appreciate the depth of the IED challenges being faced.
It underscored the need to employ subject matter experts in C-IED to support the MNJTF operations. The UNOAU will continue to work closely with UNMAS to support the AU in addressing the identified challenges, with a view to further strengthening the AU-UN partnership and further actualizing the goals of UN-AU Joint Framework.
