UNOAU Special Representative of the Secretary-General participates in the Munich Security Conference (MSC 2022)

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNOU, (SRSG) Hanna Tetteh participated in the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2022 in Munich, Germany, which was held from the 18 to 20 February. The main speaker for the opening session was the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, who spoke on, “Turning the Tide: International Cooperation in a time of mounting crises” and reflected on the imminent threats to global peace and security and the need for greater international solidarity. SRSG Tetteh was a speaker in four of the events focused specifically on peace and security on the African continent. They were 1.“Beyond Coups, interventions and sanctions - What’s next for stabilization and peacebuilding in the Sahel” which included Comfort Ero – the President of the International Crises Group and 2. “A Gordian knot: The Sahel’s fragility in focus” – which also included the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, 3. “Red Sea Alert: The Horn and the Gulf between competition and cooperation” – which also included the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Foreign Minister(FM) of Ethiopia – Demeke Mekonnen Hassen and US Senator Chris Coons, Simon Coveney – Minister of Foreign Affairs (Ireland) Stefano Sannino of the EEAS and 4. “Rethinking Responses: Terrorism, Violent Extremism and Trans-organized crime in Africa” which also included DPM & FM Demeke Mekonnen of Ethiopia, AbdiSaid Muse Ali – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia among others. During all the meetings while drawing attention to the root causes of the crises affecting the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and the challenges posed by terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime the SRSG emphasized the complexity of the specific regional challenges and the need to focus on responses that took into account the promotion of human security, increasing support to humanitarian and peacebuilding interventions, and the promotion of effective governance, and inclusivity.
