On 18 September, SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga represented UNOAU at the 22nd UN-AU Joint Task Force (JTF) on Peace and Security held at UN Headquarters in New York, to discuss the status of the partnership between the UN and the AU and provide updates on the implementation of the Joint UN-AU Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security.

The AUC and the UN Secretariat were represented respectively by AUC PAPS Commissioner Bankole Adeoye; the Under-Secretary General (USG) for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo; the USG for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix; the USG for Operational Support Atul Khare; and Assistant Secretary-General (ASG)for Africa Martha Pobee.

As a result of the meeting, and based on joint discussions, a Communiqué was adopted.  The Communiqué reflected   participants’ views and discussions on peace and security developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia, Sudan, Central African Republic (CAR) and Gabon, as well as recent unconstitutional changes of Governments in the Sahel region.

During the discussions, the JTF underscored key achievements in the UN-AU partnership including with RECs/RMs and noted the need for sustainable financing of UNSC-mandated AU-led PSOs. During the meeting, participants expressed concerns over the resurgence of Coup d’Etats and military takeovers on the Continent. The JTF welcomed efforts to deepen collaboration on operational support matters, including through the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and acknowledged the positive impact on mandate implementation in various operational contexts. On Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali, the Joint Task Force reiterated the joint AU and UN commitment to support transitional authorities towards the return to constitutional order, in coordination with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Both Organizations emphasized the need to strength collaboration in mediation support and focusing more on their joint initiatives on the women, peace and security, and youth for peace and security agendas.
