UN Deputy Secretary-General meets with the AUC Chairperson on the margins of the 5th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting

On 15 July, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, met with the AUC Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on the margins of the 5th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the AU and the RECs/RMs. The Deputy Secretary-General briefed the AUC Chairperson on her recent visits to China and India where she, inter alia, engaged with the Chinese Central Bank Governor to discuss the restructuring of debt in Africa. The Deputy Secretary-General and the AUC Chairperson further discussed the implementation of Agendas 2030 and 2063, highlighting the need for Africa’s united voice around establishing a new consensus in the fight against poverty, decarbonization, and the protection of biodiversity. Their discussions also focused on the inclusion of the AU into the G20; the Deputy Secretary-General noted that the UN is committed to support the role of the AU in effectively representing Africa’s interests at the G20. The AUC Chairperson noted that the AU-UN-EU partnership is paramount in addressing the multiple challenges faced by the continent, and in this regard, expressed his hope to reactivate the AU-EU-UN Tripartite mechanism on the margins of the forthcoming UN General Assembly.
