UNOAU attends Second Meeting of the AU-UN Joint Task Team on the Operationalization of UNSCR 2719 (2023)

The UNOAU attended the 2nd Consultative Meeting of the Joint African Union (AU) – United Nations (UN) Task Team on the Operationalization of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2719 (2023) on the financing of AU-led peace support operations (PSOs) held from 29 to 31 July at the UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting was co-chaired by General Cheikh Dembélé, Head of the AU Peace Support Operations Division, and by General Mamadou Gaye of the UN Secretariat team. The objective of the meeting was to build on the progress achieved so far following the inaugural meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in May and the subsequent consultations, with a view to developing a joint roadmap that would be endorsed by both organizations during the next Annual Conference scheduled to take place in October.

During the meeting, the delegations continued their engagements in the four work streams in elaborating the Joint AU-UN Roadmap on the operationalisation of UNSCR 2719 (2023): joint planning, decision-making and reporting; mission support; budget and finance; and compliance and protection of civilians. Subsequently, each of the work streams defined their strategic objectives, and identified key priorities and their respective workflows. The meeting also worked on drafting the narratives and key messages of the Roadmap. Both delegations underscored the commitment of their organizations to the implementation of the UNSCR 2719 (2023) and enhanced collaboration towards greater institutional and operational readiness to finalize the roadmap and to continue advancing in its implementation. A joint communiqué on the meeting has been issued.
