UNOAU supports workshop on the African Union Military Observers Training Curriculum Development
From 25-29 August, the AU Military Observers Training Curriculum Development Workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya. It brought together subject matter experts on international peacekeeping, alongside specialists from the Peace Support Operations Division of the African Union Commission, UNOAU, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, and the International Peace Support Training Centre.
The workshop aimed to develop a curriculum design to prepare AU Military Observers with the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required to operate effectively and ethically in Peace Support Operations.
Participants examined lessons from past UN and AU operations, identifying challenges, best practices, and requirements to strengthen observer effectiveness in line with African Union Commission mandates, regulations, and the force generation process. Building on these discussions, participants designed a curriculum that seeks not only to enhance technical competence but also to embed ethical, normative, and cultural dimensions essential to the success of AU Peace Support Operations.
