African Union Peace and Security Council convenes its 1338th meeting to discuss the situation in the Central African Republic

On 9 April, the African Union Peace and Security Council convened its 1338th meeting to discuss the situation in the Central African Republic.

The meeting was chaired by the Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and Chair of the Peace and Security Council for April 2026, Ambassador Hirut Zemene Kassa.

Briefings were delivered by the Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the Central African Republic, the Economic Community of Central African States and a representative of the Central African Republic.

Participants welcomed the peaceful conduct of presidential and municipal elections in December 2025 and progress in implementing the 2019 political agreement. SRSG Parfait Onanga-Anyanga highlighted advances in women’s participation in the municipal elections, while drawing attention to the country’s humanitarian situation and funding gaps.

Discussions also covered ongoing peace and stabilization efforts, including regional cooperation initiatives and support from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic. Participants underscored the importance of sustained international support and regional solidarity to consolidate peace and stability.
