Informal monthly meeting of UNSC President and AUPSC Chairperson for June 2026

UN Security Council and AU Peace and Security Council hold informal monthly consultative meeting

On 18 June, the United Nations Office to the African Union facilitated the informal monthly consultative meeting between the President of the United Nations Security Council for June, Ambassador Leonor Zalabata Torres of Colombia, and the stand-in Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council, Ambassador Nassir Aminu of Nigeria.

The meeting reviewed their respective programmes of work, highlighting shared priorities on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Participants reaffirmed the importance of regular exchanges, improved coordination, aligned agendas and consistent messaging between the two Councils.

Discussions also emphasized mediation and negotiated solutions to conflict, including the meaningful participation of women and youth, and welcomed the forthcoming consultative meeting between the AU Peace and Security Council and the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council. Participants further underscored the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council resolution 2719 (2023), including support for AUSSOM, and strengthening cooperation to address the illicit flow of weapons to armed groups.
