SRSG to the AU meets Chair of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change

On 12 February, on the margins of the African Union Summit, the Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union, Mr. Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with the Chair of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, Dr Antwi Boasiako Amoah of Ghana.

The SRSG congratulated Ghana on assuming the chairpersonship of the African Group of Negotiators and commended its leadership on advancing the implementation of the Paris Agreement, including efforts related to carbon markets and innovative climate finance mechanisms.

Discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s engagement on climate diplomacy and advancing the development of a Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security. The SRSG underscored that climate change acts as a risk multiplier that can exacerbate fragility, displacement and instability, highlighting the importance of integrating climate considerations into peace and security frameworks.

Both sides also discussed preparations for upcoming global climate negotiations, including COP31 and COP32, which will be hosted by Ethiopia in 2027. The exchange highlighted the important role of the African Group of Negotiators in advancing Africa’s climate priorities and strengthening coordination across regional and international platforms.

The AGN Chair welcomed progress on the Common African Position on Climate, Peace and Security and reaffirmed the importance of addressing the links between climate change, development and stability. Both sides agreed to continue cooperation with the African Union and UN partners to advance Africa’s climate priorities and strengthen technical coordination ahead of forthcoming climate negotiations.
