UNOAU participates in commemoration of International Mine Action Awareness and Assistance Day in Ethiopia

On 2 April, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in an event organized by the United Nations Mine Action Service in Ethiopia to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action in Addis Ababa.

The event brought together donors, mine action stakeholders and partners to highlight the humanitarian impact of explosive ordnance in Ethiopia and the need for strengthened action to support civilian protection, humanitarian access and post conflict recovery.

Held under the 2026 global theme, Invest in Peace, Invest in Mine Action, the programme featured presentations, exhibitions and demonstrations by UNMAS and partners on ongoing initiatives, achievements and operational challenges. Remarks were delivered by the Ambassador of France to the African Union and Ethiopia, Mr Alexis Lamek, followed by technical briefings from UNMAS, mine action operators, non governmental organizations and donor representatives.

Discussions underscored the links between mine action, sustainable development and long term recovery in conflict affected areas. Participants also emphasized the importance of increased investment, stronger coordination and sustained international support to reduce explosive ordnance threats and protect affected communities.
