From 18 to 23 April, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in the annual meeting of Heads of Rule of Law, Justice and Corrections components in United Nations peace operations, held in Cairo, Egypt.
The meeting was organized by the Justice and Corrections Service within the Office for Peacebuilding and Peace Support, with support from Egypt and Qatar. It provided a platform to review strategic and operational developments, share good practices and discuss emerging priorities in strengthening rule of law, justice and corrections in support of conflict prevention and sustaining peace.
Discussions covered criminal accountability, mission transitions, regional partnerships, capacity gaps and the role of justice and corrections in complex mission settings. Participants also exchanged views on UN80, liquidity challenges and evolving peacebuilding support arrangements.
UNOAU outlined its support to African Union rule of law efforts through related areas including security sector reform, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, and police assistance. It also explored opportunities for closer collaboration with the Justice and Corrections Service.
