From 17 to 24 March, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in the pre deployment verification of the Djiboutian military contingent designated for deployment to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.
The assessment was conducted at Camp Buttle Hill 13 in Djibouti City and focused on the contingent’s operational preparedness ahead of deployment. The inspection team received briefings on the contingent’s composition, equipment and training requirements, as well as updates on documentation, medical screening and individual assessments already completed.
This was followed by a comprehensive inspection of operational, logistical, medical and administrative components. As part of the assessment, the contingent carried out a series of drills and demonstrations, during which the inspection team introduced dynamic scenario based elements to evaluate responsiveness under a range of potential operational conditions.
The assessment also highlighted the contingent’s use of modern technologies, including unmanned aerial systems, vehicle mounted and ground based jammers, alongside coordinated firepower assets such as mortars and anti-aircraft systems. These capabilities were identified as important force multipliers in support of operational effectiveness.
UNOAU’s participation supported African Union efforts to ensure rigorous assessment standards and strengthen readiness for deployment to AUSSOM.
