From 24 to 28 August, the United Nations Office to the African Union provided support to the Second AU Knowledge Management, Institutional Capacity-Building and Experience-Sharing Workshop on AU Peace Missions in Abuja, Nigeria.
Organized by the African Union Commission Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security with support from the African Development Bank, the workshop focused on strengthening institutional learning, knowledge management and collaboration across AU peace missions.
Participants included representatives of the AU Commission, AUSSOM, the Multinational Joint Task Force, the AU Monitoring, Verification and Compliance Mission, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms, AU Member States, development partners, researchers and subject matter experts.
Participants exchanged lessons learned and good practices on mission performance, compliance and accountability, resource mobilization, protection of civilians, humanitarian coordination, Women, Peace and Security, mission transitions, and the use of technology in peace operations.
UNOAU delivered technical presentations and facilitated discussions, sharing relevant lessons and practices from UN peace operations to support AU efforts to strengthen institutional learning and operational effectiveness.
The workshop concluded with recommendations to strengthen knowledge-sharing systems and collaboration among AU peace missions, improve accountability and mission effectiveness, and promote sustainable partnerships and financing for future operations.
