UNOAU supports visit of UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to Addis Ababa

From 12 to 14 April, the United Nations Office to the African Union supported the inaugural visit to Addis Ababa of Mr Chaloka Beyani, United Nations Under Secretary General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.

The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect and the African Union, with a focus on early warning, prevention of genocide and other atrocity crimes, and accountability.

During the visit, Mr Beyani held discussions with representatives of the United Nations, African Union, European Union, IGAD and civil society. Exchanges focused on strengthening cooperation, information sharing and preventive action, including in relation to Sudan and South Sudan.

Discussions also considered African accountability mechanisms, the AU’s right of intervention under Article 4(h) of the AU Constitutive Act, and the role of the African Standby Force in atrocity prevention.
