UNOAU facilitates the informal monthly meeting between the UNSC President and the AU PSC Chairperson for the month of September
On 6 September, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) facilitated the meeting between the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the United Nations in New York and the President of the UNSC for the month of September, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cameroon to the African Union and Chairperson of the AU PSC for September, Ambassador Churchill Ewumbue-Monono.
The Ambassadors exchanged information on the respective programs of work and activities, as well as the priorities of the two Councils, with the aim of building synergies on matters specific to Africa and on areas of common or mutual interest. Ambassador Churchill Ewumbue-Monono highlighted that Cameroon’s Chairpersonship of the AU PSC coincides with its historic presidency of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. He pointed out that the next AU PSC meeting, to be held at the Ministerial level in New York on 25 September, on the theme of “New Security Threats in Africa and the Future of the AU Peace and Security Council”, would follow on the activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the AU PSC.
Ambassador Žbogar highlighted the envisaged activities, including a signature high-level open debate on “Leadership for Peace” on the same day, focusing on building trust and reaffirming the objective and principles of the UN Charter and international law. Both signature events will take place within the framework of the Secretary-General’s New Agenda for Peace. The Ambassadors called for extensive discussions on post-ATMIS security arrangements, implementation of UNSCR 2719, as well as climate, peace and security, among others.
