On 6 September 2024, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) facilitated an informal meeting between Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations, and Ambassador Mohamed Omar Gad, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union in their capacities as incoming President of the UNSC and Chairperson of the AU PSC, respectively, for the month of October 2024.

During the discussions, Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl praised the ongoing intergovernmental negotiations leading up to the Summit of the Future. She outlined some of the major events planned for October, including a high-level signature event on science diplomacy and new technologies, a debate on Women, Peace and Security, the 9th Informal Seminar, and the 18th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the UNSC and AU PSC members. She also emphasized the importance of upcoming discussions on climate change, peace support operations (PSOs) in Africa, and the implementation of UNSCR 2719.

Ambassador Mohamed Omar Gad briefed on the AU PSC's planned activities, highlighting key priorities such as post-conflict reconstruction and development. He also mentioned the upcoming inauguration of the Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Centre on 2 October and deliberations on the peace, security, and development nexus, as well as pressing humanitarian issues in Africa, climate change, counter-terrorism, and a meeting of the Group of Friends of the AU-UN Partnership.

The Ambassadors also addressed various country-specific and regional issues during their discussions. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Pietro Mona, Ambassador of Switzerland to Djibouti and Permanent Representative to the AU, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, along with other key officials.
