UNOAU supports AU in the development of a Training Curriculum in Applied International Humanitarian Law

From 16-18 June, UNOAU in collaboration with the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) and the Government of Switzerland supported the development of a Training Curriculum in the application of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in AU peace support operations. The curriculum development workshop took please in Nairobi, Kenya. The rationale for the development of the curriculum was based on the need to strengthen the application of IHL in the implementation of AU peace support operations. The board identified some important focus areas such as the use of force in the conduct of hostilities, IHL and Non-State Actors and Armed Groups, IHL Enforcement and Accountability as well as well as IHL and emerging technologies. The course targets uniformed personnel from troop and police contributing countries deployed or preparing to deploy into AU authorized and mandated PSOs. Participants included Subject Matter Experts from ICRC, IPSTC, UNOAU and the Swiss Support Team. It is expected that the pilot course be delivered in October 2025.
