On 3 August, the United Nations Office to the African Union attended the 1357th Open Session of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on Children Affected by Armed Conflict in Africa, held at the African Union Headquarters under the theme “Education in Conflict Situations.”
The session was addressed by Ambassador Mohamed Khaled, Permanent Representative of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the African Union and Chairperson of the AUPSC for August. The United Nations was represented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Discussions focused on strengthening the protection and continuity of education for children affected by armed conflict, including measures to protect education, sustain learning during crises and support recovery. Participants also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination and periodic reporting to the AUPSC on progress.
The session further considered sustained engagement with AU Member States by the AU Special Envoy on Children Affected by Armed Conflict to advance efforts to protect education and ensure continuity of learning in conflict-affected settings. Full AUPSC communique is available here.
