From 22 to 24 June, the United Nations Office to the African Union provided technical support to an African Union assessment mission to the North African Regional Capability in Cairo, Egypt. Led by the African Union Peace Support Operations Division, the mission reviewed implementation of the African Standby Force Training Directives (2024–2026) and identified priorities for the next training cycle (2027–2029).
The assessment brought together representatives from the African Union Commission, the North African Regional Capability Secretariat, Egyptian training institutions and regional experts to review progress in strengthening regional training coordination and preparedness.
Discussions focused on integrated mission planning, mission support, civilian rostering, compliance and accountability, protection of civilians and capability development. Participants also identified challenges related to funding, regional exercises, civilian capability generation and digital learning infrastructure.
The mission concluded with recommendations to strengthen resource mobilization, expand Training of Trainers programmes, enhance e-learning platforms and improve integrated mission planning. The findings will contribute to the development of the African Standby Force Training Directives for 2027–2029.
