From 20 to 30 November, the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) supported African Union (AU) led assessments of Egyptian military and police contingents preparing for deployment to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The military verification, conducted at a military camp in Cairo from 21 to 29 November, was led by the AU Peace Support Operations Division and supported by the UNOAU Military Adviser. The assessment reviewed operational readiness across logistical, medical, administrative, and operational components to ensure preparedness prior to deployment.
In parallel, the UNOAU Police Adviser participated in the Assessment for Mission Service of Egyptian Individual Police Officers as part of the AU Police Selection Assistance and Assessment Team. Conducted at the Egyptian Peace Operations Training Centre, the assessment certified 88 officers for deployment, including 15 women.
From 26 to 30 November, the UNOAU Police Advisor also supported the operational capability assessment of the Egyptian Formed Police Unit as part of the AU Formed Police Assessment Team. The unit, comprising both main and reserve personnel, successfully completed the required evaluation process and was declared ready for deployment.
UNOAU’s participation supported AU efforts to ensure that personnel deployed to peace support operations meet required standards of readiness, performance and accountability.
