From 15 to 19 December, the United Nations Office to the African Union, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, participated in a workshop to review the African Union training curriculum on the Compliance and Accountability Framework. The workshop was held in Accra, Ghana.
The workshop aimed to update the AU training curriculum to ensure it remains relevant, practical, and responsive to the evolving needs of personnel engaged in AU authorised and mandated Peace Support Operations. Discussions focused on strengthening the capacity of military, police, and civilian personnel to plan and conduct operations in full compliance with international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and established standards of conduct and discipline.
The review builds on the AU’s existing Compliance and Accountability Framework, which is supported by five policy documents guiding personnel deployed in field missions. Participants included representatives from OHCHR, the AU Peace Support Operations Division, legal experts from AU peace support operations, regional training centres of excellence, and UNOAU.
The updated curriculum is expected to be disseminated to all troop and police contributing countries, accompanied by training of trainers programmes across Africa, to support consistent application of compliance and accountability standards in AU peace support operations.
