SRSG to the AU and Head of UNOAU meets with the Ambassador of Angola to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to AU and ECA

On 23 January, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of UNOAU, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga met with the Ambassador of Angola to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Professor Miguel Cesar Domingos Bembe, who is also the outgoing Chairperson of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee.

Discussions reviewed key achievements recorded by the African Union during Angola’s tenure as Chair of the African Union, covering the period from February 2025 to February 2026. The exchange also addressed ongoing challenges facing the continent, including global geopolitical developments and threats to multilateralism, as well as measures to respond to these challenges.

The meeting further examined peace and reconciliation efforts across Africa, mediation of conflict situations, and the AU’s engagement at global fora. Attention was also given to AU institutional reforms and efforts to strengthen the continent’s peace and security architecture, including the importance of timely responses to early warning.

Emphasis was placed on advancing multidimensional initiatives to support Africa’s integration, including leveraging the continent’s natural resources in support of sustainable peace and development.
