From 27 to 30 January, the United Nations Office to the African Union participated in the African Union Climate Change 2025 Review and 2026 Strategic Planning Workshop, held in Accra, Ghana.
The workshop brought together representatives from AU institutions, Regional Economic Communities, climate commissions, the African Group of Negotiators, and development partners to review progress and set priorities for the year ahead. Discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s collective engagement on climate action in line with Agenda 2063, the Paris Agreement and the AU Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy.
Participants reviewed outcomes from recent climate summits and began preparations for upcoming global climate negotiations, including COP31 and COP32. A coordinated engagement calendar was developed to align Africa’s positions and ensure effective participation in international forums.
The AU also identified priority areas for 2026, including climate adaptation and resilience, energy transition, innovation, food security, biodiversity, and the links between climate, peace and security.
UNOAU contributed technical inputs, particularly on climate, peace and security, supporting efforts to translate policy commitments into practical actions. The workshop concluded with a consolidated work programme to guide AU climate engagement in the year ahead. UNOAU will continue to support the African Union in advancing Africa’s climate priorities, including in the lead up to COP32, to be hosted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
